Do you have a passion for working with kids..? Do you want to go into teaching as a career..? Or do you want to experience what it is like on the other side of the desk..? Whatever your reasons, Oyster has the teaching placement to suit you.

We can offer teaching placements in Chilean Patagonia, Madurai in India, the Kathmandu valley in Nepal, Central Kenya, Port Elizabeth in South Africa, Northern Tanzania, and Livingstone in Zambia. All of our placements are designed to be challenging but fun. You will go out with a group of like minded people and receive full support throughout from our experienced UK team and in country representatives.

We do not require you to have any teaching experience as we give you an ‘introduction to teaching’ briefing at the pre departure course. To give you some examples, this covers lesson plans, keeping the children engaged and ideas on the basics of the English language as a reminder to you! Your greatest asset to the schools we use is that you can speak fluent English. Your abilities outside of academia are also very important and useful. If you have an interest in sport, music, drama or art then you will be a great asset to your school. In the past we have people put on short plays and musicals with the kids which everyone has enjoyed immensely. In one school in Tanzania the volunteers put on a school sports day. It was a fantastic experience with everyone joining in, from the students to the teachers to the volunteers!

We provide you with comfortable basic accommodation whilst you are away. In Tanzania, Kenya and Zambia we will rent you accommodation that is usually on, or close to, the school site. In Chile, Nepal and India you will live with a local family. This may sound daunting at first but it is the best way to get yourself fully immersed into the culture. The key point with all of our projects is that you are not a tourist travelling through barely touching the surface. You will have the opportunity to truly get under the skin of the country.

The role of the volunteer in developing countries is vital. Oyster volunteers do not ‘replace’ local teachers, instead, they work alongside local staff assisting in classrooms and helping the teachers improve their own use of English.

English is the international language. The students understand that to give them a better chance to make a good living for their families, they need English and what better way to learn than by being inspired by a volunteer from a native English speaking country.
