Want to put your English skills to use abroad? Teach English to children in China! Our 5, 9, and 13-week programmes give you the perfect chance to teach basic English skills to school children in Shanghai, Si Chuan, or Zhengzhou, as they give you a glimpse into their vibrant culture. No teaching certification or prior experience required!

Teaching English

The English language is of ever-growing importance in China, taught as a required subject from the third year of school upwards. As a volunteer, you will have the chance to teach 11-15 English lessons per week in a Chinese school, mostly on your own. Upon request, you could teach sport lessons instead of English.

During the Chinese summer holidays from July through August, you will have the opportunity to volunteer in a pre-school, in a facility for disabled children, or at a Chinese summer camp, where volunteers help children and teenagers learn English in a playful atmosphere. Wherever you volunteer in China, you will increase your understanding of the Chinese education system and culture, as you gain valuable hands-on teaching experience.

Living in China

Get ready for the cultural experience of a lifetime! Our partners will introduce you to life in China and help you prepare for your volunteer project through a 5-day orientation in Shanghai at the beginning of your stay. Aside from meeting other volunteers from around the world, you will also have the chance to take part in various enriching cultural activities, including:

  • A trip to the old part of Shanghai with a stroll along the Bund Promenade

  • 6 Mandarin lessons

  • A cooking course

  • An art lesson covering Chinese painting and calligraphy, embroidery, or silhouette-cutting

As you volunteer, you will live on school property or in a shared flat, with basic amenities. In your free time after work and at the weekend, you will be free to travel independently or with other volunteers, widening your understanding of China and the world.
